Coventry's Mitchell a hit in softball pitcher's duel, bests Rockville's Real

Apr. 12—Elizabeth Mitchell's pitching for the Coventry High softball team kept Rockville in check Wednesday afternoon.

But it was the junior's offense that gave the Patriots the win.

Mitchell's walk-off home run in the 11th inning lifted Coventry to a 2-1 win over Rockville in a NCCC game in Coventry.

The Patriots (5-0) have won their first five games of the season.

The game was tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the 11th when Mitchell hit her game-winning home run. It was the junior's only hit of the game.

Mitchell was also the winning pitcher. She allowed three hits while striking out 20 and walking four.

Rockville (3-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and held the lead until the sixth when the Patriots tied it up.

Julia Boya contributed three hits for Coventry while Lindsey Harrington, Caroline Wesoloskie and freshman Brooke Blouin each had one.

Alexis Real led Rockville with two hits and a RBI while Mikayla Leskey also had a hit. Real took the loss, allowing seven hits, striking out 18 and walking one.

The teams meet again Friday, this time in Vernon.

SOMERS 7, BOLTON 4. In Somers, the host Spartans used a pair of three-run outbursts to come from behind and earn an NCCC win.

Madison Peacock, the second batter in the top of the first inning, homered to put Bolton (2-3) in front. The Bulldogs built their lead to 4-1 in the fifth when Sarah Mattei, who finished with three hits, scored on a passed ball. But Somers (3-1) got even with three runs in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on Kiana Kalman's two-out RBI double. Lucy Catellier followed with a single for two insurance runs.

Kalman, Catellier, and Addison Powell had two hits each to back winning pitcher Hailey Schafer. The freshman walked three and struck out eight. Breelin McDougal matched Mattei's three hits while Peacock finished with two hits and two RBIs. Caleigh Sheehan fanned nine in taking the loss.

Somers is at Northwestern Friday. Bolton hosts Rockville Monday.

CANTON 11, SUFFIELD 5. In Canton, Alice Butterfield had two hits, five RBIs and was the winning pitcher as the Warriors picked up a NCCC win.

Canton (4-2) led 3-0 after an inning before Suffield (1-4) scored twice in the second. The hosts replied with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take control.

Butterfield hit a double while striking out 11 in the circle for Canton.
