Coventy, Rockville ride pitching to shutout softball wins

Apr. 26—The Cromwell High softball team has what Coventry wants. The Patriots sent a message Tuesday they're determined to get it.

Elizabeth Mitchell fired a three-hitter and Charlotte Wesoloskie drove in the lone run in the fourth inning as unbeaten Coventry edged reigning Class S state tournament champion Cromwell 1-0 in a non-league game in Cromwell.

Mitchell allowed three hits. She walked two and struck out seven.

Cromwell won the Class S crown a year ago by defeating North Branford in the final. North Branford eliminated Coventry in the semifinals.

The Patriots (9-0) managed only four hits — one each by Wesoloskie, Julia Boya, Lindsey Harrington, and Maya Waterhouse — on Tuesday against Cromwell pitcher Lily Kennedy but were able to manufacture a run. Kennedy walked none and fanned 11.

Coventry has allowed five runs in nine games as the Panthers (5-4) were shut out for the third time and had their four-game winning streak snapped.

The Patriots host NCCC foe Granby today.

ROCKVILLE 12, STAFFORD 0 (5). In Stafford, Alexis Real allowed one hit — a single by Andrea Moulton — in Rockville's five-inning NCCC win. The senior walked one and struck out 13.

The Rams (7-2) scored twice in the first inning to take the lead and put it away with an eight-run fifth. Kourtney Anderson was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Rockville. Real added two hits and two RBIs while Madison Pitkin scored two runs and drove in two. Stafford is 2-4.

Rockville will go for its fifth straight win against Cromwell Thursday. Stafford is at Bolton today.

NORTHWESTERN 11, SUFFIELD 4. In Winsted, Kyla Stevenson's bases-loaded triple keyed a four-run first for Northwestern (6-4) in the non-league win. Suffield (2-9) had eight hits.

ENFIELD 16, EAST CATHOLIC 0. In Manchester, Cassidy Wallner threw a two-hitter and struck out nine for Enfield (4-5). Enfield's Taylor Lathrop went 2-for-2. East Catholic is 3-4.
