Covered California extends enrollment period

Covered California has extended its enrollment period until Feb. 9 after officials saw “record-breaking enrollment.”

Consumers have until midnight on Feb. 9 to apply for coverage. The original deadline was Wednesday.

“We want any Californian who needs health insurance to have the opportunity to get covered for the rest of 2024, and extending the open-enrollment period will ensure they have the time they need,” Covered California executive director Jessica Altman said in a statement.

The move to extend the enrollment period also comes after Covered California phone services temporarily went offline due to a cybersecurity incident affecting a third-party vendor that supports the organization’s phone lines.

Officials said the incident was limited to the telephone systems and didn’t impact enrollment and eligibility systems.

“At this time, there is no indication that any personal information was compromised,” a news release said.

Consumers calling in to enroll in the program during that time encountered longer than expected wait times, and officials said they wanted to ensure everyone interested in the program had enough time to apply.

People who need help enrolling in the program can visit the Covered California website for assistance or call the service center at (800) 300-1506.

Covered California sells individual health insurance plans to people who can’t get coverage through their job. Depending on how much money they make, some people are eligible for deep discounts on their monthly premiums. Even families making more than $100,000 per year are eligible for discounts, the Associated Press reported.
