Covey Nest to screen pop-up film, benefitting TCRC

Oct. 23—THOMASVILLE- The Covey Film Festival will be hosting a pop-up film, Little Shop of Horrors, on Friday, October 28, with all proceeds set to benefit the Thomasville Community Resource Center.

The Covey Film Festival is the premiere fundraising event for the Resource Center, according to Covey Film Festival co-founder Sharon Maxwell.

"I joined the organization about 22 years ago when Jane Fonda was chair," she said. "People in the community had come to her (Fonda) and asked for help for teens in Thomasville and younger people in terms of academic performance and teenage pregnancy."

At the time Maxwell was introduced, she had a background in social welfare and was asked to join the board.

"I decided I needed to do more to support it," Maxwell said. "We needed to have donors, because we couldn't rely on Jane's generosity forever."

Maxwell then met with two other women to brainstorm ways they could fundraise, especially because Thomasville already had so many different events always ongoing.

"We all simultaneously agreed on a film festival," Maxwell said. "Covey Film Festival is an arm of TCRC. We are the signature fundraising event for the Resource Center. The money we make from the Film Festival goes back to TCRC."

The mission of the Film Festival is to educate, entertain and engage.

Covey shows several documentaries throughout the year designed to educate people and will often bring in guest speakers or experts on the subject matter to engage with viewers. However, Little Shop of Horrors will be for pure entertainment.

Little Shop of Horrors centers around a nerdy orphan, Seymour Krelborn, who is working at Mushnik's, a flower shop in urban Skid Row. Krelborn harbors a crush on fellow co-worker Audrey Fulquard. While searching for mysterious plants, Krelborn comes across a new mysterious, unidentified plant, who he affectionately calls Audrey II. However, the plant has a craving for blood and soon begins to sing for supper.

Krelborn has to enlist the help of the real Audrey to help him stop Audrey II from taking over the world.

Join along on their epic adventure with other fans at the Covey Nest on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., as everyone sees just what Audrey II is capable of.

The Covey Nest will have seating available for up to 75 individuals and have candy, popcorn, soda and cookies all up for sale.
