Booster doses for all COVID-19 vaccines are now available in Mecklenburg County.

Previously, booster doses for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine had been available for certain eligible people. Now, many providers are offering booster shots for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines as well, following authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots are available for people who were fully vaccinated six or more months ago and are:

65 years or older

18 years and older and live or work in a nursing home or long-term care facility,

18 years and older and have underlying medical conditions

18 years and older and work in high-risk settings as do health care workers, teachers and childcare providers or food workers

or 18 years and older and live or work in a place where many people live together (including homeless shelters, correctional facilities or college dorms).

The Johnson & Johnson vaccines are available to anyone age 18 and older who got their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson shot more than two months ago.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest recommendations allow people to “mix and match” their booster shot. That means people could choose to get any of the three available shots as their booster dose, regardless of which vaccine they got first.

Atrium Health infectious disease expert Dr. Katie Passaretti said the hospital system’s website will be updated today to allow patients to make appointments for the booster doses. Patients can make an appointment through MyAtriumHealth online.

The newest booster doses will be available at Novant Health locations as early as next week, spokeswoman Sarah Maddigan told the Observer in an email. Eligible people can make an appointment through Novant Health MyChart or GetVaccinated.org.

All booster shots are available at StarMed Healthcare’s permanent locations at 4001 Tuckaseegee Rd., 5344 Central Ave. and Bojangles Coliseum at 2700 E. Independence Blvd., the company tweeted Friday. No appointments are required.
