COVID-19 cases up 39% on South Shore, rising 4th straight week; numbers up in 23 towns

QUINCY – All across the South Shore, COVID-19 rates have increased in the latest Massachusetts Department of Public Health report on cases by municipality.

Overall, the number of new cases in the region rose by 38.6% according to the report that was released Thursday. The new case counts rose in each of the 23 municipalities surveyed.

The number of cases in the region over the two week period covered by the report, which ended April 16, was 1,386, up from 1,000 the previous period. The new case number is more than 2½ times the March 19 count, the low point in 2022, and a fraction of the 20,000 cases at the height of the omicron surge three months ago.

The state's count only includes lab-confirmed cases, not ones found with home test kits.

Cohasset and Norwell had case rates above the statewide average of 24.8 daily cases per 100,000 people.
