COVID-19: Cases, hospitalizations continue to decrease, deaths increase significantly

While COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continued on their downward trend the past week in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County, deaths increased significantly in the region.

The nine Coachella Valley cities added 396 new COVID-19 cases in the week ending Thursday. That is a nearly 12% decrease from the previous week, when there were 449 cases reported between Dec. 8 and 15.

Here is a full breakdown of confirmed total cases and deaths by city since the start of the pandemic as of Thursday (with week-over-week changes shown in parentheses):

  • Cathedral City: 14,297 cumulative cases (+46); 153 deaths (+0)

  • Coachella: 14,339 cumulative cases (+31); 123 deaths (+1)

  • Desert Hot Springs: 8,483 cumulative cases (+12); 92 deaths (+0)

  • Indian Wells: 761 cumulative cases (+7); 10 deaths (+1)

  • Indio: 25,893 cumulative cases (+118); 289 deaths (+2)

  • La Quinta: 9,655 cumulative cases (+32); 91 deaths (+3)

  • Palm Desert: 11,594 cumulative cases (+54); 162 deaths (+3)

  • Palm Springs: 9,709 cumulative cases (+68); 169 deaths (+3)

  • Rancho Mirage: 3,448 cumulative cases (+28); 60 deaths (+0)

There were also 58 COVID-19 cases reported in unincorporated communities in the two weeks ending Thursday:

  • Bermuda Dunes: 1,815 cumulative cases (+5); 14 deaths (+0)

  • Desert Edge: 810 cumulative cases (+4); 24 deaths (+1)

  • Desert Palms: 983 cumulative cases (+18); 36 deaths (+0)

  • Garnet: 1,864 cumulative cases (+11); 29 deaths (+0)

  • Mecca: 1,871 cumulative cases (+3); 25 deaths (+0)

  • North Shore: 840 cumulative cases (+0); 1 death (+0)

  • Oasis: 1,541 cumulative cases (+3); 11 deaths (+0)

  • Sky Valley: 420 cumulative cases (+2); 7 deaths (+1)

  • Thermal: 479 cumulative cases (+2); 8 deaths (+0)

  • Thousand Palms: 2,116 cumulative cases (+9); 14 deaths (+0)

  • Vista Santa Rosa: 739 cumulative cases (+1); 5 deaths (+0)

In Riverside County, there were 3,150 new COVID-19 cases reported in the week ending Thursday. That is down 12% compared to the 3,593 COVID-19 cases that were reported between Dec. 8 and 15.

COVID-19-related patient numbers continued to decrease. As of Thursday, there were 196 patients hospitalized in the county, down by 32 from Dec. 15. That number includes 20 individuals in intensive care.

While other metrics saw a downward trend, COVID-19-related deaths in Riverside County increased significantly. There were 44 new deaths reported in the week ending Thursday, bringing the total to 6,738 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Riverside County, 60.1% of residents ages 6 months and older have completed their primary vaccine series, which includes both shots of the Pfizer, both shots of the Moderna vaccines or one shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. About 30.2% of the eligible population has been boosted.
