The number of new COVID-19 cases among Wichita County residents increased substantially in the past week.
Between Dec. 27 and Monday the county recorded 986 new cases of the virus.
The death count for the period was six, including three over the past weekend. Five of the victims were in their 70s and one in their 80s.
The unvaccinated new cases discovered by Friday was 81 percent. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of county residents who contracted the virus despite receiving vaccinations was 1,528.
The positive rate rose to 28 percent among those tested for the vaccine during the past week.
The number of patients hospitalized with the virus remained steady at 28.
