COVID-19 deaths jump by 9 in South Dakota, including one young person

The South Dakota Department of Health reported nine additional COIVD-19 deaths on Wednesday along with a decrease in occupied hospital beds.

The latest deaths took the statewide total to 2,928. Of those, the coronavirus was a contributing case of death to 2,573.

The latest deaths included one person aged 10-19, the third person in that age cohort to die with the virus. One person was 60-69, one 70-79 and six were 80 or older. Five were men and four women.

Two residents of long-term care facilities were among the latest deaths. The state also reported 31 new infections in that population.

They were among 594 new cases reported by the state. The seven-day average increased to 85 cases a day during the past seven days. Since dipping to below 20 cases a day in early April, new cases have grown steadily.

Minnehaha County accounted for 111 new infections and Lincoln County, 39. Codington County had 42 and Brown County, 24.

That left the state with 1,470 active infections, the most in about two months.

Occupied hospital beds fell from 33 to 30. Three of those were intensive care beds.

An additional 741 people received a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine from the state vaccination program.
