COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to rise in Sangamon County; an unvaccinated woman dies

The number of people hospitalized in Springfield with COVID-19 continued to increase Tuesday, a report from public health officials showed.

Sangamon County Public Health officials reported 131 patients were in city hospitals — seven more than reported Monday and 22 more than Friday.

The report also included another death — an unvaccinated woman in her 80s who died Sunday after testing positive for the virus on Jan. 2. There have been 339 COVID-19-related deaths in Sangamon County since the pandemic began.

Infections reached 50,134 with 373 new cases reported Tuesday.

In Menard County, 24 new infections were added to the 3,229 total cases, 13 people were hospitalized and 13 people have died from the virus.
