Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Christina Fullford, your host of the Durham Daily.

First, today's weather:

Colder with clearing. High: 39 Low: 18.

Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. The House Select Committee on an Education System for North Carolina's Future held their first meeting on Monday. The committee did not discuss the controversy surrounding the Leandro case ruling on school funding at Monday's meeting. (WRAL)

  2. A former Durham County Detention Center detainee is speaking out regarding COVID safety as the jail experienced 112 detainees with positive COVID-19 test results. Sheikh Jallul was released after 28 hours, but he described the isolation that inmates are experiencing to prevent the spread. Officials have set aside an area for quarantine and isolation for detainees who tested positive, and Sheriff Clarence Birkhead shared with the Durham Board of County Commissioners the need for more funding as well as case count updates. (CBS17)

  3. According to the North Carolina Department of Labor, and employee was killed in an accident at the Eli Lilly pharmaceutic building in Durham. A witness claims that a man fell to his death while working on Monday, but officials have not confirmed. (WRAL)

  4. As Triangle Restaurant Week returns, small businesses are asking for community support as many spots are struggling to deal with issues the industry is facing. The industry is facing a labor shortage, rising food costs, and a decrease in people eating out. Business owners are hoping that the event brings a "much needed boost to the industry." (abc11)

  5. 911 calls are shedding more light on the emergency room scuffle on January 15 that led to the death of one. The hospital's staff made three emergency calls concerning the incident. The first caller told officers that a patient had a gun, the second call recorded three loud bangs in the background, and the third caller reported that the suspect took an officer's gun and was shooting. The 911 transcripts, along with witness interviews, and body camera footage will be used by the SBI in the active investigation. (CBS17)
