COVID-19 Keeps Meeting Virtual For Chatham Borough Council

CHATHAM, NJ — Chatham’s Borough Council plans to meet remotely on Monday night at 7:30 p.m., because of the level of COVID-19 cases remaining from the omicron variant.

In an announcement on Sunday, Borough Administrator Steve Williams said the meeting on Monday is planned virtually, with borough hall still closed to the public. The building was closed to public access beginning Jan. 3 due to the rise of COVID-19 cases from the omicron variant.

As of Jan. 21, there have been 1,324 positive COVID-19 cases among borough residents, since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Among items for adoption and discussion on Monday:

The council plans to adopt a resolution to support saving the historic Glimmer Glass Bridge in Manasquan. The bridge, on the National Register of Historic Places, is in “imminent danger of being lost forever,” the council wrote in its resolution.

The council also plans to adopt a personnel resolution that increases Glen Turi’s work hours from 20 to 29 hours. Turi is a zoning official and code enforcement officer.

It expects to adopt a resolution to appoint Sarah Lowe as a volunteer for the borough’s Farmers’ Market Advisory Committee.

It also plans to approve a financing agreement resolution to purchase a truck with a sewer cleaner from Eagle Equipment for $281,937.

The council is planning to adopt a resolution for the police department to be a part of the Hope One Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI). They will work with schools and local interfaith leaders. Police will help people with recovery from opiate and substance use disorders.

Wellesley St. has been a street on paper since 1924, between 153 and 157 Center Ave. Those residents asked that the borough remove the street, because it hasn’t been used. The council is introducing an ordinance that will take this paper street off the maps if it is adopted.
