COVID-19 was ranked as the third primary cause of death in South Dakota in 2021, according to the South Dakota Department of Health after cancer and heart disease.

Unvaccinated South Dakotans also had a much higher rate of dying with COVID-19, according to the data set, released during a House Health and Human Services Committee hearing.

Between January and October 2021, 527 South Dakotans died due to COVID-19, an increase from 496 deaths during the same time period in 2020, according to DOH data.

The data lists those who died with COVID-19 listed as as primary cause of death, not those who died with COVID-19, according to DOH.
