COVID-19: Taylor County adds 1 death Wednesday, pandemic total reaches 650

The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District on Wednesday reported COVID-19 data including 49 new cases and one more death, bringing the county's total number of pandemic fatalities to 650.

Of the 49 new cases, five were confirmed via polymerase chain reaction tests.

Active cases Wednesday totaled 1,443 (379 PCR cases and 1,064 based on antigen tests), down from 1,453 reported Tuesday and 1,553 the week previous.

The percentage of COVID-19 inpatients in the 16-county Abilene trauma service area was 2.78% Tuesday, compared to 3.56% Monday and 3.52% Sunday, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services COVID-19 database.

The Abilene trauma service area Tuesday had 24 COVID-19 inpatients, seven fewer than reported Monday. In the previous 24 hours, there were four COVID-19 admissions in the area, according to the state database.

Since hitting a recent peak of more than 9,500 daily cases of COVID-19 on July 15, the seven-day average of daily cases in Texas has been on the decline, falling to about 7,000 as of Wednesday, when 6,536 new cases were reported by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The average number of new daily cases had been rising steadily since falling to under 2,000 in mid-April, after reaching a high of more than 54,000 on Jan. 17.
