COVID-19 vaccines available for children 6 months and older at Lenawee County Health Dept.

ADRIAN — COVID-19 vaccinations for children as young as 6 months will be available starting Friday at the Lenawee County Health Department.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the Moderna and Pfizer shots for kids from 6 months through 4 years old on June 17, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended them the next day. In the U.S., COVID-19 vaccines were first tested and given in late 2020 to health care workers and older adults. Teens and school-age kids were added last year.

The shots available starting Friday, July 1, at the county health department are from Pfizer, a news release said. They are available by appointment only, and a parent or guardian must be present for minors to receive a vaccine. To make an appointment, call 517-264-5226, option 5, or visit www.lenaweecountyhealthdepartment.as.me/vaccine.

The health department said it encourages parents to speak to their child’s pediatrician if they have any questions about whether the COVID-19 vaccine is right for their child.

Vaccines for ages 5 and older are available at the health department's walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic. Those dates and times are:

• Monday: 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m.

• Wednesday: 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m.

• Friday: 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Vaccines are provided at the health department office in the Lenawee County Human Services Building at 1040 S. Winter St. in Adrian. Additionally, many local pharmacies, doctor’s offices, and other locations are providing COVID-19 vaccines throughout Lenawee County. A full list of vaccine providers and clinics can be found on the health department's website.

The Lenawee County Health Department follows the recommendations of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC, the release said. The department recommends all eligible individuals get vaccinated against COVID-19 to prevent serious symptoms that may lead to long-term health complications, hospitalization or death.
