COVID cases declining statewide, some local schools report cases dating back several weeks

COVID-19 cases in Indiana schools continue to decline, with many Monroe County schools reporting fewer than five new cases among students, if any.

Around Indiana, 4,220 new student cases were reported in the most recent update of the school tab on the state’s COVID-19 dashboard. This is down about 2,000 cases from the previous week.

There were 284 new cases reported among teachers, along with 371 new staff cases since the last dashboard update. This school year, 124,967 student cases have been reported in Indiana as the delta and omicron variants spread across the area, while 35,861 cases were reported all of last school year.

When the state school dashboard updates each Monday, all cases reported to the state during the week prior are included, said Megan Wade Taxter, media relations coordinator for the state health department. Several schools in Monroe County reported historical records dating back several weeks in addition to current information, she said, so they are included in the most recent weekly update and skew some of the numbers.

MCCSC

As part of a change in COVID-19 policy approved by the MCCSC school board Jan. 25, the district is no longer providing its own school-by-school COVID-19 data on its website, providing additional details such as if cases were reported in or outside school buildings. It will continue to report to the state, said MCCSC Communications Officer Kelby Turmail.
