COVID-19 Changes Spelling Bee Event Date In Long Valley

LONG VALLEY, NJ — The yearly spelling bee event hosted by the Long Valley Junior Women’s Club has a new date: Feb. 12.

The bee begins at 9 a.m. at the Valley View Chapel on 115 E. Mill Road and is open to all Washington township fourth and fifth graders, who may have the opportunity to take part in a larger competition at the state level.

The 19th yearly bee was originally planned for last Saturday but was postponed because of the rise in COVID-19 cases in the area from the omicron variant. The county of Morris cited a 178 positive COVID-19 case count rise in Washington township between Jan. 12 and Wednesday. On Jan. 12, the total number of cases since the pandemic started in May 2020 was 2,490. That number climbed to 2,668 on Wednesday. On Friday, it was 2,708.

Families who would like to register their children for the spelling bee will need to send their child’s name, school name, grade and phone number in an email to the event’s co-chairs, Jeri Cenziper at jbrothe@msn.com or Lori Rosania at lorirosania@gmail.com.

Rules and a practice word list will be emailed to registered participants.
