COVID update: New death tolls for South Florida counties as 91 more added across state

Florida on Thursday reported 91 more deaths and 2,125 additional COVID-19 cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

All but 40 of the newly reported deaths — about 56% — occurred since Nov. 4, according to the Herald analysis. About 35% of the newly reported have died in the past two weeks, the analysis showed.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,695,641 confirmed COVID cases and 61,630 deaths.

The CDC did not release Florida COVID figures on Friday and Sunday because of the Thanksgiving holiday, causing an artificial seven-day case and death average than where state averages currently stand.

Looking at those averages, in the past seven days the state has added 69 deaths and 1,616 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.

COVID deaths in South Florida and Manatee County

The CDC’s Community Profile Report released county-level death data for Florida’s 67 counties.

It is unclear when these newly reported deaths occurred. The Community Profile Report updates Florida’s county death tolls and rates about once every seven days, when or after the COVID-19 weekly situation report is published by the Florida Department of Health on Fridays.

As of Wednesday’s Community Profile Report, Florida had a death rate of 287 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the start of the pandemic. Two weeks ago, the state had a death rate of 285 deaths per 100,000 people.

Here’s where death rates and tolls stand in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.

▪ Miami-Dade County’s death toll sits at 9,206, an increase of 85 deaths from the CDC’s Tuesday report. That’s a rate of 339 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

▪ Broward County’s death toll sits at 4,921, an increase of 26 deaths. That’s a rate of 252 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

▪ Palm Beach County’s death toll sits at 4,287, an increase of 28 deaths. That’s a rate of 286 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

▪ Monroe County’s death toll still sits at 96, no increase. The county would be at a death rate of 129 deaths per 100,000 people if its population were that large.

▪ Manatee County’s death toll sits at 1,215, an increase of five. Manatee has a rate of 301 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES

About 13,227,652 eligible Floridians — 61.6% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND MANATEE COUNTY

Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.

▪ In Miami-Dade County, about 2,118,365 people, or 78% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.

▪ In Broward County, about 1,274,651 people are fully vaccinated, or 65.3% of the county’s population.

▪ In Palm Beach County, about 921,428 people are fully vaccinated, or 61.6% of the county’s population.

▪ In Monroe County, about 54,070 people are fully vaccinated, or 72.8% of the county’s population.

▪ In Manatee County, about 231,569 people are fully vaccinated, or 57.4% of the county’s population.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida

There were 1,319 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to a Thursday report by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, which compiled data from 259 Florida hospitals. Hospitalized COVID patients increased by 72 from Wednesday’s report, when 234 hospitals submitted data.

COVID-19 patients take up 2.29% of all inpatient beds in the latest report’s hospitals, compared to 2.31% reported in the previous day’s report.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 263 people were in intensive care unit beds, an increase of 29. That represents about 4.24% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 4.20% the previous day.

The Miami-Dade County report no longer includes hospitalization information.
