HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla said on Sunday that the city has lost another resident to COVID. The city also lost a resident to the virus last month after not having lost a resident to the virus since August.

"Unfortunately, the Hoboken community lost another resident to this virus, a woman in her early 70s," the mayor said in an update on Sunday. "I send my thoughts and prayers to her friends and loved ones. The city has had a total of 58 fatalities since the pandemic began."

Hboken University Medical Center currently has 31 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, down from 40 last week. Bhalla said of those patients, 12 are Hoboken residents. Seven are vaccinated and five are unvaccinated. (Bhalla explained further about the vaccinated residents in the hospital last week: READ MORE: Hoboken COVID Hospitalizations Climb To 40)

The mayor also gave some positive news: 95 percent of Hoboken residents over 12 have gotten at least their first dose of the COVID vaccine.

In terms of new cases, the mayor said there were 628 new positive cases reported to the city's Health Department from Jan. 8-14, a number consistent with reports in the prior two weeks. That means that a number of people equal to approximately 30 percent of the residents of Hoboken have tested positive in the past month.

Bhalla noted, "Symptomatic individuals using at home test kits while symptomatic have received false negative results. The individual will then retest after day 5 of experiencing symptoms and their test is then positive. According to the Hoboken Health Department, individuals should remain cautious if they exhibit COVID-19 symptoms and receive a negative at home test."
