Happy Thursday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up to start today off on an informed note.

Here are the top stories in New York City today:

  1. The Department of Education announced a shorter quarantine period for k-12 students that test positive for COVID-19. Starting Monday students can return to school six days after testing positive–without showing a negative test, cutting in half the previous ten day quarantine. (Gothamist)

  2. NYPD says that it saw the highest rate of shoplifting–particularly large organized shoplifting–in the past 30 years in 2021, following a national trend. That's why more and more everyday products are locked up at pharmacies across the city. (CBS New York City)

  3. President Biden plans to visit Mayor Eric Adams next week to discuss the rise in crime in New York City, representing the first time the two meet since Adams took office. Adams wants Congress to pass universal background checks at part of his "blueprint for safety." (Gothamist)

  4. A shooting at Jacobi Hospital in The Bronx took place on Tuesday during a chance encounter between two acquaintances — suspected to be gang rivals — that were both in the ER at the same time. (New York City Patch)

  5. New York City saw its deadliest year for traffic-related fatalities in 2021, according to a study by Transportation Alternatives. The year saw 273 deaths, the worst total since De Blasio's signature "vision zero" initiative went into effect in 2014. (New York City Patch)
