COVID update: six more deaths in past week, more cases

COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to increase locally, according to the Tuscarawas County and state health departments.

Between Nov. 19 and Wednesday, the county had 252 new cases of COVID-19, according to the county department. It reported 273 cases for the seven-day period beginning Nov. 12.

The county's COVID-related deaths totaled 357 as of Friday, according to the Ohio Department of Health. The total represents an increase of six from the previous seven-day reporting period ending Nov. 19.

COVID-19 vaccines are available for people for age 5 and older.

Appointments may be made by calling the county health department at 330-343-5555, extension 174 or 181, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The New Philadelphia City Health Department will have a COVID-19 drive-up booster clinic from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Tuscora Park. No appointment is needed for this event.

Vaccination appointments may also be available at local pharmacies.

Meanwhile, the number of student COVID-19 cases in Tuscarawas County schools has increased for the third week in a row.

According to the Tuscarawas County Health Department, there were 42 new student cases reported last week.

There were 37 new COVID-19 cases the week before, and 30 new cases three weeks ago.

A total of 838 students in Tuscarawas County have contracted the virus since the start of school in August.

Here is the Tuscarawas County COVID-19 school report for the week of Nov. 15-21:

Buckeye Career Center — one new student case (109 total student cases), one new staff case (17 total staff cases).

Claymont City Schools — four new student cases (109 total student cases), no new staff cases (24 total staff cases).

Dover City Schools — 14 new student cases (126 total student cases), one new staff case (11 total staff cases).

East Central Ohio Educational Service Center — no student cases, no new staff cases (four total staff cases).

Garaway Local Schools — no new student cases (20 total student cases), no new staff cases (10 total staff cases).

Indian Valley Local Schools — seven new student cases (130 total student cases), no new staff cases (19 total staff cases).

Newcomerstown Exempted Village Schools — two new student cases (101 total student cases), two new staff cases (23 total staff cases).

New Philadelphia City Schools — 10 new student cases (129 total student cases), one new staff case (25 total staff cases).

Quaker Digital Academy — no new student cases (four total student cases), no staff cases.

Strasburg-Franklin Local Schools — no new student cases (20 total student cases), no new staff cases (three total staff cases).

Tuscarawas Central Catholic — no new student cases (14 total student cases), no new staff cases (two total staff cases).

Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities — no student cases, no new staff cases (three total staff cases).

Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools — four new student cases (76 total student cases), no new staff cases (11 total staff cases).

Total — 42 new student cases, five new staff cases.
