COVID Surge Slowing In Bergen County And Statewide, Data Shows

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — The number of new COVID-19 cases in Bergen County has declined from earlier this month, data shows, though people are still contracting the virus at a steady rate.

The county reported more than 5,500 new cases of COVID-19 from Jan. 19-29. Another 60 Bergen County residents died in that 7-day period, the county said.

Across New Jersey, cases are down. Governor Phil Murphy said Monday that state leaders are "optimistic" the surge in COVID-19 cases will continue to decline.

"It’s still an unacceptably high number, but it’s down dramatically," Murphy said. "However, again, we want to say no one should be complacent here. Even though these numbers are trending very positively – and they are – they’re still higher than anything we had encountered even through last winter’s surge and the Delta variant surge from last summer."
