COVID updates: DHEC reports 13,898 cases, 55 deaths in South Carolina

On Friday, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control released data reporting 13,898 new cases of COVID-19 and 55 deaths. This is the most deaths reported in the last two weeks.

Of the reported new cases, 10,469 are confirmed and 3,429 are probable. Of the 55 deaths reported, 42 are confirmed and 13 are probable.

On Thursday, the South Carolina Children's Hospital Collective saw a record-high number of children hospitalized for COVID-19 with 61 children being treated. The number of hospitalized children decreased to 56 on Friday.

Unvaccinated children account for all but one of the 56 children, though 30 of those children are under the age of 5 and therefore ineligible for the vaccine. Almost 45% of children hospitalized are unvaccinated, despite being eligible to receive the vaccine.
