COVID update: Where death rates and tolls stand in your South Florida county

Florida on Tuesday reported 35,266 cases and three new deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

In the past seven days, the state has added 79 deaths and 32,794 cases per day, on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. In all, Florida has recorded at least 5,383,094 confirmed COVID cases and 64,005 deaths.

COVID deaths in South Florida and Manatee County

The CDC’s Community Profile Report released county-level death data for Florida’s 67 counties.

It is unclear when these newly reported deaths occurred. The Community Profile Report updates Florida’s county tolls and rates about once every seven days, when or after the COVID-19 weekly situation report is published by the Florida Department of Health on Fridays.

As of Monday’s Community Profile Report, Florida had a rate of 298 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the start of the pandemic. Two weeks ago, the state had a rate of 292 deaths per 100,000 people.

Here’s where death rates and tolls stand in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.

Miami-Dade County’s death toll is 9,565, an increase of 151 deaths from Friday’s report. That’s a rate of 352 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

Broward County’s death toll sits at 5,147, an increase of 80 deaths. That’s a rate of 264 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

Palm Beach County’s death toll sits at 4,407, an increase of 51 deaths. That’s a rate of 294 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

Monroe County’s death toll sits at 103, an increase of two deaths. The county would be at a death rate of 139 deaths per 100,000 people if its population were that large.

Manatee County’s death toll sits at 1,245, an increase of 12. Manatee has a rate of 309 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.

FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES

About 13,925,339 eligible Floridians — 64.8% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, MANATEE COUNTY

Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC:

In Miami-Dade County, about 2,228,041 people, or 82% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.

In Broward County, about 1,349,184 people are fully vaccinated, or 69.1% of the county’s population.

In Palm Beach County, about 963,550 people are fully vaccinated, or 64.4% of the county’s population.

In Monroe County, about 56,504 people are fully vaccinated, or 76.1% of the county’s population.

In Manatee County, about 242,209 people are fully vaccinated, or 60.1% of the county’s population.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida

There were 10,794 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Tuesday. This data is reported from 232 Florida hospitals. The number of people hospitalized across the state is 311 more than the day prior, when 247 hospitals reported.

COVID-19 patients take up 19.94% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 19.18% among Monday’s reporting hospitals.

Omicron, so far, is not as deadly as delta’s surge last summer. Hospitalizations have not approached records set during delta’s wave from July through September.

At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitalized in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 1,566 were in intensive-care units, an increase of 20 from Monday. That represents about 24.89% of the state’s ICU beds, compared to 25.5% the previous day.

Tuesday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 1,210 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Monday, a decrease of nine from the previous day. Of the 142 new COVID patients, 64 (72.54%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 214, decreased by nine from a day earlier.

Broward County’s Tuesday report said there were 918 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, an increase of 5 patients compared to the day before.
