Covington Catholic point guard Evan Ipsaro committed to play basketball for Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Sunday.

Ipsaro, who will be a senior at CovCath this upcoming season, is the second Colonels player to commit to Miami in the past year. Former CovCath teammate and 2022 graduate Mitchell Rylee will be a freshman on the RedHawks roster this fall.

They will play for new head coach Travis Steele, who took over at Miami after parting ways with Xavier in March. Xavier won the National Invitation Tournament under interim coach Jonas Hayes.

Rylee signed with Miami under previous head coach Jack Owens, and Rylee said in April he would stick with the commitment and join the RedHawks this season.

Owens was the RedHawks' head coach for five seasons. Miami was 14-18 overall, 8-12 in the Mid-American Conference this past season.

Ipsaro and Rylee led CovCath to a 30-5 record and a berth in the state semifinals in March.

Ipsaro averaged 21.7 points, 5.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds. He also shot 57.4% from the field, 34% from 3-point range (34 for 100) and 90.2% from the free-throw line (No. 2 in the state). He helped CovCath win the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale in December.

Ipsaro was named first-team all-state in a statewide coaches poll conducted by the Louisville Courier-Journal. Among his other scholarship offers were Bellarmine, Cleveland State, Furman, Radford, Robert Morris, Stetson and Youngstown State.

In recent tweets by Next Up Recruits shared by Ipsaro, the incoming senior is an “ELITE passer with court vision & a high IQ. A strong PG that can shoot it from outside or attack and finish well through contact. A true three-level scorer that also makes players around him better...The kid plays at a high level with a crazy IQ & incredible court vision. Has a knack at finishing. A pure shot.”

Ipsaro also played in the Kentucky-Indiana junior all-star game in June. He is one of the leading contenders for Kentucky Mr. Basketball in 2023.
