Covington man sentenced for fatal motorcycle crash

A Covington man has been ordered to spend nearly a decade behind bars for a motorcycle crash last year that killed his passenger, court records show.

Mark Weber, 27, was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison, according to documents filed in Campbell County Circuit Court.

Weber pleaded guilty in June to second-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.

The single-vehicle crash happened on April 7, 2022, as Weber was driving a motorcycle on Four Mile Road.

Betty Thomas, who was riding with Weber as a passenger, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision and Weber fled the scene without calling 911, a criminal complaint states.

It took at least 20 minutes before passersby stopped and called for help, during which time Thomas was left lying under the motorcycle, the document says.

According to the complaint, Weber had been drinking at Barrett's Pour House in Alexandria and he didn't have a motorcycle license or permit.

"At least five patrons, including a bartender, attempted to stop Weber from operating his motorcycle due to his intoxication level," the document reads.

Court records show Weber was not charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence.

Weber's attorney declined to comment on the sentence. The case was heard before Judge Daniel Zalla.
