Cowan's Chase Smith, Wapahani's Gavin Lash make IHSBCA All-State teams; Ball State scheduling news

A pair of East Central Indiana baseball players made their respective All-State teams, announced by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association, while several others received honorable mention honors.

In Class 2A, Wapahani's Gavin Lash was named to the All-State team at shortstop. This season, Lash was dominant as he helped lead Wapahani to a Class 2A semistate appearance. Lash batted .471 with 41 hits, 43 RBIs and four home runs. On the mound, he went 9-3 with a 2.61 ERA, striking out 63 batters while allowing 51 hits, 25 walks and 24 earned runs in 64.1 innings.

In Class A, Cowan's Chase Smith was an All-State selection at first base. Smith helped lead Cowan to its second straight sectional title. He batted .418 on the season with 33 hits and 25 RBIs while boasting a .951 fielding percentage. On the mound, Smith went 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA, striking out 52 batters while allowing 36 hits, 13 walks and 17 earned runs in 38 innings.

Wapahani's Luke Willmann along with Monroe Central's Aidyn Coffey and Caleb Snyder received honorable mention honors in 2A.

Ball State women's volleyball releases 2022 schedule

Ball State women's volleyball released its 2022 schedule. Fresh off a 30-4 season, which included a 17-1 record in Mid-American Conference play and a first round victory in the NCAA Tournament, the Cardinals will play 30 regular season matches in 2022.

The Cardinals open the season at the USF Tournament (Aug. 26-27), where they will play South Alabama, USF and William & Mary. They will also compete in the Lipscomb Tournament (Sept. 2-3), where they will play Oklahoma, Lipscomb and Mississippi State.

Ball State's first home match will come during the Ball State Tournament (Sept. 9-10), where it will play Arkansas State, Alabama and Green Bay. Dayton comes to Muncie (Sept. 13) and the Cardinals will compete in the Stacey Clark Classic (Sept. 16-17), where it will play Northern Kentucky and Purdue.

In conference play, Ball State will play away matches at Central Michigan (Sept. 23, 24), Northern Illinois (Oct. 14, 15), Toledo (Oct. 19), Bowling Green (Oct. 28), Miami (Oct. 29) and Ohio (Nov. 11, 12). The Cardinals will host Eastern Michigan (Sept. 30, Oct. 1), Akron (Oct. 7), Buffalo (Oct. 8), Western Michigan (Oct. 21, 22), Kent State (Nov. 3, 4) and Toledo (Nov. 16).

Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship bracket released

The schedule for the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship was released last week. Ball State's men's basketball team will be one of eight teams to compete in the event, which will be played from Nov. 25-27.

"We are thrilled for the opportunity to compete in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship," head coach Michael Lewis said. "We are excited for the early test we will get from the challenging field. This will be a great experience for our guys as the majority of them have not traveled outside of the continental U.S."

Ball State will kick things off against Vermont during the first day of competition Nov. 25 at 12 p.m. It will play either Missouri State or UNCW Nov. 26. The other side of the bracket features North Texas vs. San Jose State along with Oakland vs. Long Beach State. The championship will be played at 8 p.m. Nov. 27

Shenandoah boys basketball coach accepts Frankfort job

Dave McCollough accepted the position of head boys basketball coach at Frankfort, ending a seven-year stint with Shenandoah.

At Shenandoah, McCollough won 20 or more games six times in seven years and led the Raiders to five straight sectional titles along with a semistate appearance in 2019. McCollough, who enters his 39th year coaching this upcoming season, boasts a 613-265 all-time record.

McCollough is fourth in all-time wins among active coaches and 15th overall. Shenandoah posted an opening of the boys basketball coach on its website.

Muncie American Legion Baseball Post 19 Chiefs splits July Fourth weekend

Muncie's American Legion Baseball Post 19 Chiefs went 3-3 over the Fourth of July weekend.

The Chiefs fell twice to Kokomo (10-5, 13-3) and once to Stevensville (Michigan) Post 568 (7-2). Muncie beat Bristol Post 143 (12-1), Madisonville (Kentucky) Post 6 (12-1) and South Haven (Indiana) Post 502 (6-1).

Hole-in-one reported at The Players Club

A hole-in-one was reported at The Players Club Sunday, July 3. Kyle Sprinkle of Yorktown hit a hole-in-one on the seventh hole with a PXG wedge from 135 yards out. It was his second career hole-in-one, with his first coming on the same hole years earl. It was witnessed by Darrell Gross, Joe Wylie and Tim Lunsford.
