Cowgirl golf adds three on signing day

Nov. 10—University of Wyoming women's golf coach Josey Stender announced the signing of three student-athletes Wednesday.

Erika Cook of Greybull, Lucia Morelli of Mercer Island, Washington, and Emerson Purcell of New Albany, Ohio, all committed to play golf for the Cowgirls next fall.

"We are thrilled to sign three tremendous student-athletes who will bring a great deal of nationally competitive experience with them," Stender said. "All three will fit well in our program culture, as they are high achievers, team-oriented and coachable.

Cook will stay home in the state of Wyoming for her college golf career. Cook is from Greybull, but played for Lovell High. Cook was named the WyoPreps.com athlete of the year for girls golf this fall, and was also the Wyoming girls player of the year in 2021.

She became only the third girls golfer in Wyoming history to win four consecutive individual state titles, and was named all-state all four years of high school.

Morelli placed in the top 20 twice at the Class 3A Washington state golf championships, finishing 16th in 2022 and 13th this fall. She was a leader of a Mercer Island High team that placed fourth at last year's state tournament and sixth this season.

Purcell helped lead her New Albany High team to DI state championships in 2020 and 2021 and a state runner-up finish this year. DI is the largest classification in the state of Ohio.

Individually, Purcell placed in the top 10 at state in four consecutive seasons, finishing 10th in 2020, fourth in 2021, seventh in 2022 and eighth this fall.
