Cowley County man dies after mower overturns

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — An 82-year-old Arkansas City man died after the Brush Hog riding lawn mower he was using overturned on him.

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office said the call came in around 3:50 p.m. Deputies and Winfield Fire/EMS were sent to the 13000 block of 212th Road for an injury accident.

According to the sheriff’s office, George Hawkins Jr. was operating the riding lawn mower in the north ditch when the front wheels dug into the mud. The mower overturned, pinning Hawkins to the ground.

The sheriff says several people stopped to help. They called 911 and got the mower off of Hawkins.

Deputies began life-saving measures until Winfield EMS could take over. The sheriff says an air ambulance was requested, but before it could arrive, EMS got Hawkins to the hospital in Winfield, where he died.
