Alan Faneca steps down as football coach at Cox High after two seasons. NFL Hall of Famer wants ‘to pursue other avenues.’
Alan Faneca has been successful in every step of his life.
He was a consensus All-American for LSU.
He then played 13 NFL seasons and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
He later became the head football coach at Cox High. He led the Falcons to a 16-8 record in two seasons — including 9-3 last season — and guided them to the playoffs both seasons.
Now it’s time for Faneca to do something else.
“It has been an honor to lead and continue the legacy of the Cox football program. I want to thank the players, coaches, and everyone who gave their time and energy these last two years to strengthen that tradition,” he said. “The time has come for me to pursue other avenues and allow someone else the opportunity to lead Cox Football into its next chapter. "
At LSU, he was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American and was a finalist for the 1997 Outland Trophy, given to the best college football interior lineman.
In the NFL, he won Super Bowl XL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and six-time All-Pro.
Cox athletic director Jessica Bowman said it was “a pleasure” having Faneca as coach.
“He brought a ton of knowledge to our program and he will be missed,” she said.
