Coyote hit by car was stuck in grille until neighbors call for help, IL officials say
A woman driving home hit a coyote — and didn’t stop, wildlife officials in Illinois said.
The driver hit the coyote at about 5 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation said in a Facebook post. The driver continued home with the coyote stuck in the grille of her car.
Neighbors noticed the coyote and called for help, wildlife officials said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and animal control arrived to help free the coyote, officials said.
The coyote suffered “significant injuries to his right rear paw” and had signs of internal injuries, rescuers said.
Wildlife officials said coyotes never act aggressive but rather act afraid when rescued.
“Please always stop when you hit an animal or if you think you might have hit anything!” wildlife experts urged.
Lake County is about 40 miles north of Chicago.
