‘Cozzie’ Watkins, prominent Charlotte democratic community leader, dies

A prominent Democratic community leader in North Carolina has died.

Alista “Cozzia” Watkins passed away Thursday, according to a statement from Rep. Alma Adams.

Watkins was a nurse and the former chairperson for the 12th Congressional District.

She became a social media sensation in 2020 after delivering the roll call votes for North Carolina at the Democratic National Convention. She did it virtually while standing proudly in front of Charlotte’s Hidden Valley community.

Adams, a longtime friend of Watkins, said in a statement that Watkins was “a cut above the rest” and that “her passion to make a difference made everyone better.”
