CPD holds drill at Carlsbad High

On Thursday, you may have seen a lot of police activity at the high school. This was intended. The Carlsbad Police Department hosted a Mass Casualty Incident Training Scenario. This drill was in conjunction with Carlsbad Municipal Schools and first responder agencies. These drills allow officers and others to make sure they are well prepared for the worst possible scenarios. The Eddy County Sheriff’s Department, Carlsbad Medical Center, Carlsbad Fire and EMS, and Carlsbad Municipal Schools all assisted. This included some local residents playing parts in various scenarios.

Police Chief Skinner said these kind of drills allows the department to evaluate their response and make improvements. Training is an ongoing process. We will do everything we can to help to make sure are students are safe in school this year.

On a much more positive note, all of Carlsbad’s fall sports schedules are now up on the school’s web page: https://www.carlsbadschools.net/ and then clicking on the “Athletics” tab on the right. Varsity Football begins Aug. 19 with a 7 p.m. game at Artesia, followed by Goddard the following week. The first home game of the year is Sept. 2 against Volcano Vista.

Varsity volleyball also starts on the 19th with a game at Centennial High School, followed by games at Mayfield and then Artesia. The Cavegirls have their first home game on Aug. 30 against Lovington.

With soccer, the varsity boys start at home with games against Organ Mountain and Las Cruces High on Aug. 19 and 20. The girls don’t start until Aug. 26, when they play at a tournament in Las Cruces. The cross country season starts Aug. 26 at Clovis. Best of luck to all of our local sports teams and many other extracurricular activities, which we look forward to profiling throughout the year. Thank you to athletic director Greg Haston and his staff for all of their hard work organizing this year’s schedule.

The Chamber of Commerce’s Age-Friendly Council has been extremely busy lately. One of the Council’s most popular efforts has been organizing casino trips and nature walks for seniors. These trips are coordinated through the North Mesa Senior Center, the Alejandro Ruiz Senior Center and Lakeview Christian Home. Popular nature trips include the Bat Flight, Sitting Bull Falls and the Guadalupe Mountains. The casino bus trips have been so popular that a wait list has been formed. Please coordinate with either of our local senior centers if you are interested in learning more about these trips.
