Fans of West Point Market can soon visit a new brick-and-mortar shop dedicated to the beloved upscale market’s most popular offerings. Although this change has caused the closing of the Pandora’s Cupcake location in Tallmadge, which recently announced on social media that it will close on March 22.

West Point Market closed in the Wallhaven area of Akron in 2015. A smaller version of the family-owned grocery store that followed was open in Fairlawn from 2016 to 2018.

The new business, named Crafty Steere, will soon sell West Point Market’s cheese spreads, brownies, cookies and salads all under one roof. That same building will also house goods from other small local businesses, as well as Pandora’s Cupcakes.

Rick Vernon, who was West Point Market's third-generation owner, has been making and selling the market’s legendary triple-layer brownies over the past three years at Pandora’s Cupcakes. When Vernon heard that Pandora’s Cupcakes owner Ken Carr was considering closing shop, he connected him to Brian Steere, CEO of Steere Enterprises in Tallmadge and owner of Springside Athletic Club in Bath. Vernon, with the help of former West Point Market cheese shop manager Diana Bole and Springside Cafe operator Demi Boyazis, recently began selling the market’s original cheese spreads within the athletic club.

Steere and Vernon had discussed finding a larger space in a prime retail location to sell the West Point Market items, so the opportunity to purchase Pandora’s Cupcakes was not taken lightly.

The change in ownership would mean the end of the Pandora’s Cupcake location in Tallmadge, but the cupcakes will still be sold at the Montrose location, which Steere anticipates will finish its transition to Crafty Steere by the end of March.

When Crafty Steere opens, it will have the same hours as Pandora’s Cupcakes. Steere anticipates that customers will be able to purchase West Point cookies when the shop opens, with West Point salads being available within 30 days of its opening. They are using this time to perfect their execution of some of the 350 recipes that Vernon’s father, Russ Vernon, developed for the former store.

Those interested will be able to get updates on the new business on Crafty Steere’s website and Facebook, which are in the process of being created.
