Crash on I-70 leaves driver trapped, causes interstate to be shut down
Medics are working to determine whether a medical emergency led to a single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on I-70 that left the driver trapped and unresponsive, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said.

Larry Thurston, 54, of New Castle, Indiana, was taken to Indiana University in Indianapolis by Care Flight from the accident, which occurred just after 1:30 p.m. on the interstate in the area of Centerville Road. Deputies were dispatched there for a crash in the median.
The vehicle had been eastbound and for unknown reason ran off the north side of the east lanes and became entangled in the cable barrier. Thurston was not able to answer questions and was extremely excused once he regained consciousness, according to the sheriff’s office.
The passing lanes of both east- and westbound traffic were closed during the investigation, and the interstate was shut down completely for about 15 minutes so Care Flight could land. The scene was cleared and the interstate was reopened in both directions about 2:45 p.m.
