Crash on I-95 Saturday morning leaves rescued dogs en route to shelters under evaluation

Twenty-three rescued dogs survived a crash Saturday morning in New Castle County along I-95.

A Mercedes Sprinter2 van carrying the dogs was traveling at 6:47 a.m. on I-95 north just north of South College Avenue near Newark, according to the Brandywine Valley SPCA and Delaware State Police. The dogs, which were rescued from overcrowded Louisiana shelters, were en route to multiple rescue organizations, according to the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

Police said the Mercedes was struck in the rear by a 2013 Kia Forte whose driver had lost control of the vehicle. The impact of the crash caused the van, driven by a Louisiana driver, to veer off the roadway and overturn in an embankment, according to police. Neither of the drivers was injured in the crash.

The driver of the Kia, a 31-year-old man from Elkton, Maryland, was issued a ticket for failing to drive at an appropriate speed for Saturday's weather conditions, police said.

First responders and the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare were able to move the dogs to safety following the crash, the SPCA said, and the medical team from the Brandywine Valley SPCA Copeland Center for Animal Welfare was called to evaluate the dogs.

At least one dog with a leg injury was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic, according to the BVSPCA.

Reggie’s Fund, an animal welfare organization with centers in Wilmington, Newark and Rehoboth, will support financial costs if the dogs need further medical needs, according to the BVSPCA.

New Castle County saw several periods of heavy rain Saturday morning as the storm blew through the state, bringing with it wet roads, gusty winds and flooding.
