MELBOURNE — At least one person was killed and several others injured Saturday afternoon in a six-vehicle crash in Melbourne that was expected to shut down traffic for hours, police said.

The multi-car pileup occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Harbor City Boulevard and New Haven Avenue, Melbourne police said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and several others were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, said Sgt. Brendon Eder of the Melbourne Police Department.

In a tweet later in the afternoon, police said the wreck had led to "at least one fatality."

Eder did not have an exact number of people injured and did not disclose any identifying information about the deceased person. It was not immediately known what caused the vehicles to all crash into one another.
