Driver killed in Highway 22 crash east of Gates

A fatal single-vehicle crash Monday night closed Highway 22 east of Gates in the Santiam Canyon for several hours.

According to Oregon State Police, a Kenworth CMV semi-truck was traveling westbound when it left the road, went over an embankment and caught fire.

The vehicle was engulfed in flames and destroyed. The driver was killed. Police have not yet released the name of the driver.

The highway was closed in both directions and travelers had to find an alternate route through the night. It has since been reopened.
