28-year-old killed in Tuesday morning crash on I-95 SB that partially closed highway

Delaware State Police have announced that a 28-year-old man from Newark died in the car crash on I-95 Tuesday morning that partially closed the interstate near Christiana. Police have since identified him as Termell Fowle.

The crash, which state police said happened at 7:26 a.m., occurred on I-95 south in the area of the Christiana Road overpass.

According to police, the Fowle was driving north on I-95 in a gray BMW when he lost control of the car for "unknown reasons." The BMW began to spin and hit the metal end of a guardrail in the center median before going through a crossover opening into the southbound lanes of I-95, police said.

The spinning car entered the path of an unloaded dump truck driven by a 49-year-old man from Pennsville, New Jersey, and the front right corner of the BMW hit the front left corner of the dump truck, state police reported. The vehicles continued southbound for "a short distance" before stopping against the center concrete barrier.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, Delaware State Police said. Fowle was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The dump truck driver was not injured, but police said the crash ruptured the truck's fuel tank. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control hazmat team was called to clean up the spill.

The crash closed the left three lanes of I-95 south for over three hours, although some delays continued after because of the back up. The incident is still under investigation.
