Crash involving Fort Collins police car closed Mulberry, Howes intersection Thursday

A crash involving a Fort Collins police vehicle closed an intersection near Old Town for several hours Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred about 2:10 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Mulberry and South Howes streets. A Fort Collins police officer was responding emergent — which means their lights and sirens were activated — to a crash at Mulberry Street and Interstate 25, according to a news release from Fort Collins Police Services.

The police vehicle was traveling east on Mulberry when it hit a Honda CR-V that was traveling south on Howes Street. After being hit, the Honda came to a rest at the southeast corner of the intersection. The police car came to a rest after sliding into a Ford Transit van that was stopped on Howes Street facing north, according to the news release.

The adult female driver of the Honda and the police officer were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The eastbound Mulberry Street lanes between Meldrum and Howes streets were closed for about five hours while the Fort Collins Police Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling (CRASH) Team responded to investigate.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are under investigation. Anyone with information about this crash who has not yet spoken to police can contact officer Phillip Morris at 970-416-1165.
