Crash kills Winterville woman; scooter driver dies from injuries

Athens-Clarke police are investigating a fatal wreck Saturday on Cherokee Road in east Athens and reported that a man involved in a crash in early June also died Saturday.

The Cherokee Road wreck occurred shortly before 7 a.m. A 2006 Honda Accord driven by Keosha Martin, 38, of Hull was traveling north when it crossed the center line and collided with a southbound 1999 Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla driver, Linda Motichek, 70, of Oglethorpe County, died at the scene, police said.

Martin and a juvenile in his car were both injured and taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment. The wreck is still under investigation.

Anyone with information on the wreck is asked to contact Master Police Officer Shawn Denmark at 762-400-7364.

The June 2 crash occurred about 10:35 p.m. on the Athens Perimeter about a half-mile east of the U.S. Highway 441 entrance ramp, according to the police report.

Police said a scooter and a 2015 Kia Rio were in the right lane traveling in the same direction at the time of the wreck.

The scooter, driven by Grant Small, 35, of Athens, was hit in the rear by the Kia which threw him back into the Kia’s windshield, according to police. Small received a serious head injured and was hospitalized until his death on Saturday.

Police said the driver of the Kia was interviewed and released. No charges have been filed.

There have been nine fatal vehicle deaths this year in Athens-Clarke County.
