One dead, three injured in six-vehicle crash on I-95 near Fort Lauderdale airport

Southbound lanes on Interstate 95 near the Marina Mile exit in Fort Lauderdale were closed for hours Sunday after a multi-car crash involving six vehicles left three injured and one dead.

At 4:06 a.m. Sunday, a red Kia Forte sedan driven by a Miami man, 29, was traveling south on I-95 north of State Road 84 when the driver lost control and began veering southeast, according to Florida Highway Patrol. The car collided with the concrete median wall and came to rest blocking the inside center and outside center southbound lanes.

A black Mercedes-Benz GLA250, driven by a Pompano Beach woman, 34, was traveling south in the outside center lane approaching the first car. The second driver crashed into the first car and came to rest blocking the outside lane of southbound 95.

Those two drivers were uninjured.

Four other cars — a black Lexus sedan, a silver Cadillac sedan, a black Kia Forte and a black Ford Explorer — crashed as part of a chain reaction following the initial crash.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a 7-year-old boy from Doral who was riding in the 2015 silver Cadillac sedan suffered severe injuries; the driver of that car had critical injuries and a 34-year-old passenger had lesser injuries.

The black Kia Forte sedan, came to a stop in the outside center lane of southbound I-95. The driver, 23, from Miami, then exited her car to try to provide help. She was standing to the left of her car at the outside center lane when the Cadillac hit her car. She was then hit by her car and the Cadillac She died at the scene, FHP said.

Traffic is being diverted to Interstate 595.

FHP is investigating.
