If you're a fan of good old-fashioned arcade-style racing games, and if the artistic stylings of Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog give you a warm, nostalgic reminder of your wasted youth, you're going to love the return of the kart-racing classic Crash Team Racing. In particular, if you're a PlayStation fan, this is another cross-platform remake of a previously exclusive game, and it's about to become available for the first time on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. We'd say it's a perfect holiday gift if it wasn't still in preorder mode; but it's still a fine present for those who believe in delayed gratification and the pleasure of anticipation, even if that person is yourself.

Debuting at the 2018 Game Awards, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled updates the classic 32-bit kart racer for its 20th anniversary. The new game is a remaster of the original, Crash Team Racing, released in 1999 for PlayStation. That title featured Crash Bandicoot, Sony’s orange-denim-wearing marsupial from that more cartoonish era with its beloved mascot games.

The original was developed by Naughty Dog, now better known for critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like the Uncharted series. CTR was an old couch favorite, offering split-screen multiplayer for up to four players in addition to the single player, story-based Adventure mode, which saw Crash racing across 16 different tracks to save the world from evil alien antagonist Nitros Oxide.

Development for the remaster is being handled by Beenox, well regarded for its work on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. With Nitro-Fueled, Beenox promises a ground-up remake of the original, similar to last year’s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy or the Spyro Reignited Trilogy released last month. The remaster carries over all tracks, characters, and game modes from the original title and promises new kart and character customization options, as well as online multiplayer mode.

The standard game is offered at $39.99, with a Nitros Oxide Edition retailing at $59.99. Coughing up the extra cash unlocks the mantis-like boss character at the beginning of the game as well as bonus kart and character skins. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is available for preorder on Amazon; although it doesn't come out until June 2019, for some game fans it will be worth the wait.
