Why is 'Our Flag Means Death' Season 2 worth watching

Following the end of the first season of Our Flag Means Death, with Stede (Darby) leaving Ed (Waititi), much of the beginning of Season 2 is about heartbreak. While the two are apart, they're still pining for each other.

Stede has reunited with his crew, but he's thinking about hopefully seeing Ed again, while Ed chose destruction and pain as his way to cope with his heartbreak, sailing on Stede's boat.

While we won't spoil exactly which characters come together in Season 2, we will say there's a new group of pirates that are exciting additions to the mix, under Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao (Ruibo Qian) who essentially saves Stede and his crew from Spanigh Jackie (Leslie Jones). The focus for the Pirate Queen is cohesion, unity, mutual support and balance, which she admits is why men have had a hard time "fitting in" with her crew.

Watch Our Flag Means Death on Crave

There's no shortage of shows to watch that will make you laugh, but Our Flag Means Death Season 2 continues to show the difference really clever writing makes on its audience.

Despite the fact that we're dealing with a lot of characters, a lot of interpersonal dynamics, the comedy is still incredibly tight. There's a lot going on but you don't feel completely let loose in the commotion of the characters, you just want to go on this journey with them.

Darby and Waititi execute this love story so brilliant that you do really feel invested in where this relationship could go, while a welcome addition in Season 2 is diving into specific relationships between other characters as well.

But we will say that scenes with all, or most, of the cast members continue to be some of our favourites.

Our Flag Means Death Season 2 will have you going though all of your emotions. Creator David Jenkins takes on the quirkier comedy moments with just as much commitment as the earnestness of the more emotional storylines.

It's not surprising that the series has a cult following and it's still one of our favourite new-er shows to watch, continuing the push the boundaries of pirate-focused storytelling.
