Craven County closings, cancellations, delays announced ahead of Tropical Storm Ian
Gov. Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency on Wednesday as a precaution ahead of Hurricane Ian moving through our state.
The storm has been downgraded to a tropical storm, however, there is a potential for flash flooding due to heavy tropical rains and minor river flooding is possible for all of Eastern North Carolina from Thursday evening through early Saturday morning, according to the NWS in Newport/Morehead City. Strong NE winds will persist over an extended period which may cause isolated minor issues for Coastal North Carolina and adjacent inland counties Thursday through Saturday. There is also the possibility for a few tornadoes throughout Eastern NC on Friday through Saturday and a prolonged period of strong northeast winds is expected Thursday through Saturday morning.
As a precaution locally, Craven County Schools will have a remote learning day on Friday, Sept. 30 for all students and staff. All district buildings will also be closed.

According to an email sent to parents, remote learning is taking place in order to avoid having to make up the day. Your child’s teacher and school will provide additional information about remote learning for the day.
All extracurricular activities and afterschool programs scheduled for Friday, September 30 are canceled.
CANCELLATIONS, CLOSINGS, DELAYS
- Craven County Clean Sweep’s Big Sweep event initially scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 at various locations in Craven County will be rescheduled. The committee plans to reschedule the event and the new Big Sweep event date and details will be announced when that information is determined.
Further updates will be posted as closings and cancellations are announced.
- Craven Community College will be closed Friday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 2, due to the threat of dangerous weather conditions associated with Tropical Storm Ian.
This closure will affect classes and activities at all locations, including New Bern, Havelock and the Volt Center. Only emergency personnel will have access to the grounds and facilities until college officials have deemed the campus safe for staff, faculty and students.
Classes scheduled for Thursday night will operate as planned.
-Craven Early College East Blood Drive scheduled for all day Friday has been canceled.
-Thursday and Friday events for the North Carolina Seafood Festival have been canceled.
- Because of the anticipated impacts of Tropical Storm Ian, Pamlico Community College will be closed Friday.
- Havelock v.s. DH Conley high school football game is canceled for Thursday.
