Best performances

What a way to open the football season. Three juniors stood out above the rest helping lead their teams to the only three wins of the weekend for Crawford County schools.

Buckeye Central's Derex Dean put in another clinical performance against Crestline — having done so in his varsity debut last season — completing 89% of his passes (8-of-9) for 169 yards and four touchdowns to three different receivers. Bucyrus' Malachi Bayless torched the Mississinawa Valley defense again, this time throwing (22-of-32) for 341 yards, five touchdowns and rushed in a sixth as one of six carries for 16 yards. Colonel Crawford's Trevor Vogt made his presence felt in ever facet of the game catching two passes for 55 yards and a touchdown, returning a kickoff 71 yards for another score, recovered a fumble on defense and picked off the Riverdale quarterback once.

Other notable performances:

Buckeye Central's Manny Mullins rushed eight times for 89 yards and a touchdown, caught one pass for 15 yards and returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. Max Aichholz had a 37-yard pick six, JR Martin made play-after-play on defense racking up double-digit tackles, and Tyler Sanderson caught three passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns while also corralling a punt and taking it 71 yards for a touchdown.

Bucyrus' Blayne Barto rushed 20 times for 145 yards and one touchdown, along with catching three passes for 48 yards and two scores. Randy Banks had seven catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Colonel Crawford's Kamryn Lohr was 3-of-5 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns, he also rushed for 64 yards and a score on three attempts. Tanner Dyer rushed seven times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Crestline's Carter Jones rushed 12 times for 115 yards and had a two-point conversion.

Galion's Braxton Prosser carried the ball 18 times for 49 yards and a touchdown while also catching two passes for 48 yards and a score. Gabe Ivy had two touchdowns and 92 yards on 14 totes.

Wynford's Kalen Skidmore had a fumble recovery, stopped an Otsego drive on fourth down and blocked an extra point. Kaiden Blair rushed 26 times for 142 yards.

Surprises

The biggest surprise was how Wynford closed the gap on a very talented Otsego team. Three times in the past two years the Knights have walloped the Royals by a 137-37 margin in two playoff games and the 2021 season opener. Both programs have a ton of new faces and new coaches leading the way, but for the Royals to have a 12-6 lead at halftime and ultimately fall 18-12 after a late Otsego touchdown should be something positive to take from the result. Fans in Holmes Township should be excited to see what riches the Cyle Skidmore era can bring.

And at Unckrich Stadium, Galion went toe-to-toe with Division VII powerhouse McComb for a nearly three quarters of the contest before the Panthers showed why they're a premier program in Northwest Ohio and pulled away for a 26-point win. There's some things that need worked out offensively for the Tigers, notably in the passing game, but glimpses of the team's potential was shown against McComb. And when this team figures it out and starts clicking — watch out.
