You wanted more Astrid, you’ll finally get more Astrid.

A “Crazy Rich Asians” spinoff is in early development at Warner Bros., spotlighting the romance between Astrid and Charlie, played in the 2018 blockbuster by Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr., Deadline reported Friday.

The project will be written by Emmy-nominated HBO hit “Barry” producer and writer Jason Kim, also known for his work on “Girls.”

Charlie Wu was the first love of Astrid Young, cousin of Nick Young — who in the original film, based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel of the same name, is played by Henry Golding — in Kwan’s second installment of the trilogy, “China Rich Girlfriend.” The engagement between Charlie and Astrid, who in “Crazy Rich Asians” leaves her cheating husband, was thwarted by her parents’ belief that he wasn’t the right man to marry their daughter.

The original film, directed by Jon M. Chu, centered on the romance between Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick and the former feeling out of her element in the presence of the latter’s incredibly wealthy family, namely his mother (Michelle Yeoh).

Even with the Astrid-Charlie story underway for moviegoers, the previously planned “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel, centered on Nick and Rachel searching for her birth father in Shanghai, is still in the works, according to Deadline.

“Crazy Rich Asians” wasn’t just a hit at the box office, but with critics as well. The film, which was nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for outstanding performance by a cast in a movie, holds a 91% approval rating and is certified fresh on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
