Creighton re-elected as Stark County commissioner
With 99.3% of precincts reporting, Stark County voters on Tuesday looked to have re-elected Janet Weir Creighton to another four-year term on the board of county commissioners.
According to unofficial results from the Stark County Board of Elections, Creighton received about 69% (87,782) votes while Democrat challenger DaMonda Streeter received about 31% (40,230).
Creighton, a Republican, has served as a commissioner since 2010. The 72-year-old has held a variety of roles in Stark County government, including recorder and auditor. She was also the mayor of Canton.
Creighton said on Tuesday night she wanted to thank voters for their support.
"I always appreciate the vote of confidence," she said.
One of her main focuses as a commissioner, she said, has been helping turn the county around financially. Looking ahead, she said it's important for Stark to maintain financial discipline.
"I look forward to another four years of serving the county, keeping us on the right track and keeping us fiscally responsible," she said.
Creighton also congratulated Streeter for having the courage to put her name on the ballot.
"Not everybody will do that, so congratulations also to my opponent," she said.
The commissioner race was Streeter's first time running for office. The Massillon native runs a childcare business and is currently pursing a bachelor's degree at Kent State University. She previously told The Repository she has always been an active voter and decided to run for a position on the board of commissioners because she wanted to help bring change to Stark County.
County Auditor Alan Harold re-elected in uncontested race
Republican Alan Harold ran unopposed for re-election as county auditor.
With more than 99% of precincts reporting, he had received 102,534 votes, according to unofficial results from the Stark County Board of Elections.
Harold was first elected to office in 2010.
