Commemorating your loved ones is a timeless art.

“I feel like by making cremation jewelry and the keepsakes that I do, I really bring a lot of people some comfort, maybe a little closure, and just kind of nursing them through the grief process because it's really long and it's really hard,” the Owner/CEO of Purple Cloud Studio, Michele Gould, told Yahoo Finance.

“Nobody really wants a burial plot to be the last piece of real estate that they own,” she added. “Land is at a premium and the cremation rate is pretty much through the roof. People's families are scattered far and wide and I feel like the cremation rate is, depending on where you are in the country, about 50% to 70% and in some places higher.”

An average casket costs slightly more than $2,000, according to the Federal Trade Commission, while some mahogany, bronze or copper caskets sell for as much as $10,000. And according to the Cremation Research Council, the average cost of a direct cremation is $1,100.

A cremation keepsake from Purple Cloud Studio usually costs about $100 to $500 and can be customized by shape, size, and color. Michele has her own cremation keepsake necklace made with her father’s ashes that is in the shape of a heart. She says it provides a lot of comfort for her to have her dad close.

“I wear it a lot,” Gould said of the piece that she wears. “My mom has one, my sister, pretty much I did something for all of my family members who were interested in having a little piece of my dad.”
