Mar. 22—Creston High Theater combines comedy and mystery this weekend with the stage performance of "The 39 Steps."

Performances will be 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the high school. Tickets are only available at the door each day.

"The 39 Steps" is a parody of the 1915 book by John Buchan and the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock movie.

"It's an action packed mystery that is funny and has interesting surprises," said Creston student Taron Needham who is in the cast. She has two parts; Mrs. Higgins and Margaret.

The play, set in 1935, is a "fun mystery" as described by director Laura Granger. Granger said the performance is more complex than what Creston High has done in recent shows.

"There are probably more than 100 sound effects and the scenes change a lot," she said. "There are lots of changes, but it's still simple." CC Zachary is assisting with set changes and props.

While researching the show, Granger said the intrigue of "The 39 Steps" is not every production company does the exact, same show. She said the script and details provide some room for different interpretation and improvisation.

"No part is a small part," said Sam Duncan, who plays Richard Hannay, the lead character. Bridget Hopkins plays Pamela, when teamed up with Hannay, is the romantic relationship in the show.

"It is a lot of fun," Duncan said about the script. What has helped him enjoy it even more is the chemistry among all the cast.

Ami Patel said she has enjoyed being part of this show.

"It goes by fast. If you blink, you will miss things."

Other students in the cast are: Austin Seaton, Brendan Millslagle, Bridget Hopkins, Brooke Hanson, Carson Beer, Cash Abildtrup, Chaylee Needham, Khai Nguyen, Kohl Ringer and Wyatt Hitz. Stage crew includes Amber DeGonia, Brighton Regan, Caden Brinder, Carson Cooper, Nevaeh Kerns and Paytin Smith.

Granger said the performance is intended for middle school students and older. There are some light, sexual references.
